CASSIE’S SERIES OF POEMS: CORONAVIRUS POEM
Hi Readers,
In the midst of coronavirus and Polish borders closing, I decided to write a poem so that in a few years’ time I can look back at it and remind myself how the situation seemed and felt. Here it goes:
“Coronavirus, the poem”
No way in and no way out.
Borders closed, in shops there is a crowd.
Never before did I see such empty shelves.
Before weekend, just in case, people share their farewells.
No way in and no way out.
Polish borders close tomorrow’s night.
Who knows when the next time will be
For me to see my dog and my family?
I wonder “is Easter holiday too near?”
Then I look around at all distrust and fear.
Toilet paper, pasta, rice...
Hard to get them no matter the price.
I made some grocery shopping the other day,
The date for the next delivery is March, 23rd.
It all seems a bit apocalyptic
And UK’s politicians remain rather cryptic.
Global virus roaming round,
financial crisis coming about,
isolation and travel ban,
what had happened to all the fun?
I’m not quite sure what to believe
But toilet paper I wish I could receive.
Conspiracy theories circulate,
Religious fanatics believe it’s fate,
Some others say it’s natural selection,
Scientists seek for the forms of protection.
Meanwhile I don’t even work remotely,
“Will I get my money back for the flight?” - I think, “Hopefully”.
Never before was I in a situation
When me and my family were separated by a legislation.
In a way it feels very cinematic
(not to mention incredibly dramatic).
Like a beginning of one of those dystopian future films
(I think a day will come this too will appear on some big screens).
My boyfriend went to Switzerland
so this weekend I’m home alone.
Not to worry - I’m pretty much like Kevin,
There’s plenty of things I can do on my own.
There is a certain degree of confusion,
Slowly turning into some social disillusion.
It came from nowhere
Now - it’s everywhere.
When will it stop?
And more importantly,
Could I too get a break?
-A.
